Although everyone’s high school journey is different, one thing is collectively viewed as stressful by many upperclassmen- thinking about college. The impending task of exploring different colleges is often viewed as daunting, and causes several students to put off doing so. Many don’t know where to get started, and others struggle to find time to think about college through their busy weeks. What many don’t know is that learning about different colleges is a lot easier than one may think- and the task can be done in school.
Throughout the fall, representatives from several colleges and universities have visited Parkland High School. These visits range from schools that are only a short drive away from the Parkland area, such as Cedar Crest College, as well as schools as Boston University that are farther away. Every student has a different idea of how far away from home they’d like to go, and the schools visiting PHS vary accordingly. During these visits, representatives from said colleges/universities provide information on admissions, campus life, academic options, athletics, and more.
Another important part of college exploration is also found within school- PHS guidance counselors. The Trumpet had the opportunity to ask Mrs.Witkowski, guidance counselor for 10-12th grade students last names HOL-LAK, her opinion on college visits and how they can benefit students who are beginning to think about college. “I think these visits are really beneficial because some students may not be able to tour schools on their own. Having the schools come here gives the students an opportunity to learn about the school face to face,” she says. Mrs.Witkowski also details how students can take advantage of these opportunities. She included the importance of creating connections, asking questions, and doing personal research. “Follow up with the admissions representative. It’s good to have a contact person. It shows that you’re really interested in learning about a school and their process.” Finally, she includes one last tip for students beginning their college research. “Although it’s a crazy time, find a moment to meet with your school guidance counselor. Don’t wait until the last minute, put yourself out there!”
Parkland High School presents several great opportunities to plan ahead, and attending a college visit during the school day is one of them. By signing up in the guidance office and having a signed pass from a teacher, learning more about what the future may hold is only one step away.
