There are many different methods of studying, but not everyone knows that some of these ways work better for specific types of learning. There are four main learning types: auditory, visual, reading/writing, and kinaesthetic. Each of these types absorbs information best from different forms of teaching and studying. Students can determine their learning types through conversations with a teacher or guidance counselor or online quizzes.
Auditory learners retain information better when spoken aloud, so they would more likely absorb information from a lecture rather than from a textbook. Ways of studying that cater to this learning type include recording lectures so they can be listened to at a later point, using the text-to-speech function on online textbooks, or discussing the topic with others. Students can also record their own notes so they can listen to their own condensed summary of what they need to know.
Visual learners recall information best when they can see the information in front of them, whether it be in text or picture format. These students should study using things like diagrams and flashcards in order to best get a visual representation of the information. Color-coded notes and videos can also be extremely helpful study tools for these types of learners.
Reading/writing learners learn best from written words and texts, so textbooks are a very good method of studying. Other methods include writing and re-writing notes until the information is fully absorbed. Having neat, organized notes is important for these students and helps to keep their thoughts in order. Courtney Bittner (11) Says, “To better help my learning capabilities, I write things down to help memorize them. I do better academically [knowing my learning type]”
The last learning type, kinaesthetic, comprehends information better through hands-on activities. These students benefit from studying in groups and acting out information, but when studying by themselves, they can use flashcards as a way to study actively.
Researching what study methods work best for their learning type can be extremely helpful to students and both improve their grades and make studying a more enjoyable activity.
