Parkland High School is planning to break ground and add new building additions. Vision 2030 includes 26 new classrooms, new science labs, added group spaces, a new athletics lobby, and additional space in the cafeteria and nurses suite. Along with new traffic patterns to accommodate more vehicles, and connection of wings in the back of the building to improve the traffic flow of students. Administration at Parkland believes this will help create a better learning environment at the high school, but how do students feel?
Freshman Chloe Coonradt said, “I think it will make getting to class easier, and help hallway congestion.” The main focus of the renovations is to address the growing enrollment in grades 6-12, and to limit overcrowding in the high school. The additions to the hallway will not only help PHS students navigate the school better, but it will also provide more places for socialization among students. However with renovation plans set in place, it has left the question of how the construction may affect the school day.
It’s been said by the administration that they are working to develop a thoughtful and balanced plan that will ensure school programming continues normally. All PHS students will still have a good learning environment that encourages them to excel despite the construction that will be taking place. It is estimated that the bidding process for the high school project could begin in Fall of 2025. The goal is to have project completion by Fall 2027.
The district has aimed to provide full transparency and updates on its planning. Conducting over 40 presentations and public meetings to give the Parkland community a full understanding. Parkland School District is committed to ensuring responsible use of community resources, and that Project 2030 stays within the established budget of $58.8 million. And most importantly it is focused on keeping PHS students the top priority during all building and for all future plans at Parkland High School.
