This year, the Parkland wrestling team is introducing a new addition; Cheerleaders! For the first time in school history, the school spirit for the match will be amplified by the energy and enthusiasm of a dedicated cheer squad.
Wrestling Coach Kiechle expressed his excitement for this development stating, “It brings new energy to the gym where it’s relatively a little quieter… well-needed noise.”
An assistant coach had this bright idea of having a cheer squat for wrestling matches to make it more lively. The cheer squad has been working hard learning new routines and cheers that are tailored to wrestling. They have been practicing eagerly to ensure they can bring the same level of energy and excitement to the mat as they do for the basketball court and football field.
The addition of cheerleaders to wrestling matches promises to create an effective and engaging experience for everyone. This brings the school spirit to a different level. Coach Keichle states “All feedback has been positive.” Leo Kern, senior captain of the wrestling team, states, “Having Cheerleaders has been a game changer with the crowds.”
The cheerleaders like it as much as everyone else. They were very excited about this new movement to cheer for another sport. Laney Lewis, senior captain of the cheer team, states “I love that I get to be here and show support for the wrestlers.”
