Many high school students argue that we should have longer breaks like College students do. College students get a Thanksgiving break, about a month-long winter break, a week-long spring break, and some time off for Easter. However, we also have to consider that if we were to have these lengthy breaks, it would mean a shorter summer break for high schoolers. The hypothetical question is, which would high school students prefer, longer breaks during the school year, and a shorter summer break, or what do we have now?
On a poll on The Trumpet Instagram 76% voted that they would like to keep their longer summers. But why is this? Many like the long break in the summer to relax, go on vacation, and forget about school. “It’s nicer to have longer summer than shorter individual breaks,” said Molly Phares (10). Everyone loves to go on vacations to beautiful destinations, warm beaches, and maybe tropical islands. The longer summer break allows plenty of time for travel.
Occasionally, some students go on vacation during the school year. This is sometimes to get away from the frigid Pennsylvania winters or to go on a ski trip. Vacations during the school year are a great getaway, but it is stressful to return to loads of make up work. Jayden Zabler (9) said, “It can be a really good break, but when you get back you can have so much work that it will stress you out.”
Some places students go to during the school year, may not have the opportunity to visit during the summer, or the weather at the certain location is better while we are experiencing winter. “The certain places that if you go during the school year, the weather is the best. Say if you want to go on a ski trip to Colorado, you can’t go there during the summer,” said Abby Wood (11).
Though we always wish our breaks are longer, we must learn to value our summer breaks. Maybe a vacation during the school year will help some students push through the extensive school year. For now, we can be grateful for our long, beloved summer break and our dream of our coming summer.
