Since September 2023, Ada Limón has served as The U.S poet laureate. The poet laureate is a poet that has been appointed by the government. They often participate in writing poems for special government events, and are expected to engage with the public through the power of poetry. Appointed by the Library of Congress, Limón wrote poetry for National Parks and NASA. This current term concludes this month.
Poetry month takes place in April because of The Academy of American Poets, which started this month in 1996. Schools, libraries, bookstores, and even online communities have their own ways of celebrating. Particularly, some may choose to participate in a poetry month challenge, in which they write a poem based off of specific prompts everyday of the month. They range from themes to types of poetry. You could also visit your local library and pick up a poetry book. There may even be a poetry event in your town. These may include poetry readings or poetry sharing events.
There are also many kinds of poetry that don’t necessarily require any astounding literature knowledge. You could paste together random magazine clippings to create your own unique poem. There are also poetry Mad Libs, which only require you to fill in a few words.
Overall, poetry month is a month dedicated to celebrating the creative craft of poetry. Poetry month inspires people to create and read, keeping the world’s love of literature alive.
