When someone mentions the art department, a wide variety of kinds of classes may come to mind. There are so many physical art classes like ceramics, drawing, painting, jewelry and metals. On a more technological level, there are classes like photography, computer art, or 3D design. If you prefer a more studious approach to art, there is AP art history. There’s even performance arts like multiple levels of theater classes, band, orchestra, or chorus. With all of these different kinds of art classes, National Art Honor Society (NAHS), and art club, there are so many ways to get involved with the art department.
Recently, the A-Wing has been having a little bit of extra fun! On Thursday, April 3rd, members of the art club, NAHS, or anyone taking a high-level art class, took a trip to New Jersey to see the “Grounds for Sculpture”. There were tiny sculptures and there were enormous ones. There was a sculpture pretty much everywhere you looked. Everything was insanely detailed, and the placement was carefully considered and planned. Nothing was simply thrown on display somewhere. The entire exhibit was placed strategically, creating an even more astounding experience.
More recently, on Thursday, April 10th and Friday, April 11th, Ceramics teacher, Ms.Tauber, invited a guest artist, thanks to a foundation grant. The guest artist showed, taught, and supervised ceramics students learning another way to fire clay called Raku. Senior, Anna Lorah, explained this process and what they were really doing. She said “Ok, so we’re doing Raku today, which is basically like a fancy old-fashioned way of firing ceramics. Basically it’s put in a pit of fire, flammable stuff, and removing the oxide and everything.” (Lorrah 12)
So with field trips to New Jersey, to guest artists teaching people to play with fire, it seems like the art department has been going on lots of adventures, and certainly keeping their students on their toes. Students involved with the art department are not only able to freely express their creativity, but they’re also getting the opportunity to have all kinds of new experiences, and learn new things every day.
