The MTV Video Music Awards, also known as the VMA’s, are an annual awards ceremony focused on celebrating the year’s best in the music video medium. These awards always spark conversation throughout social media as the VMA’s feature iconic tributes, live performances from up and coming artists, and the distribution of many “moon person” trophies.
This year, Lady Gaga took home 4 moon person trophies, making her not only the most nominated artist of the night with 12 nominations, but the night’s biggest winner. Her awards included Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration, Best Direction, and Best Art Direction. Sabrina Carpenter and Ariana Grande were also major winners, with each taking home 3 VMA’s. Grande’s “brighter days ahead” won her Video of the Year, and Carpenter took home the award for Best Pop Artist.
In addition to distributing many awards highlighting the year’s most notable music videos and artists, the VMA’s are known for having a multitude of live performances. These performances truly make the VMA’s a special event as they not only make the awards incredibly entertaining but bring the music videos to life in front of a live audience. This year’s performers included artists who have been making strides in the music industry for several years, including Mariah Carey, Ricky Martin, and Doja Cat. The 2025 VMA’s also also featured up and coming artists and groups who have recently taken a rise to fame including Tate McRae, Lola Young, and KATSEYE.
Tate McRae’s electric performance became a social media sensation due to her incredible choreography and dancing. Her competitive dance background shined through as she showed off her flexibility and musicality while performing hit songs “Sports car” and “Revolving door.” McRae wasn’t the only notable dancer of the night- girl group KATSEYE has been remarkable for their incredible dancing, which they showed off during their pre-show performance of internet-sensation “Gnarly.” The audience got to hear yet another viral hit with Lola Young’s live performance of “Messy,” making the night a special one for new artists to bring their talents to the stage and make their mark on the music industry.
The MTV VMA’s are always a fun event for both attendees and viewers at home, and this year truly stood out. The awards ceremony served as a way for artists who have recently entered the spotlight to show off just how talented they are, and their performances and awards are sure to be remembered in coming years.
