Pittsburgh is a city filled with many culinary delights, from hearty Primanti sandwiches and delicious pierogies to incredible ice cream. It seems that almost everywhere you turn, there’s an opportunity to find a sweet treat.
The first place I stopped was Schenley Scoop, located right in Schenley Plaza, next to The Porch. The location is perfect for University of Pittsburgh students and visitors. They offer classic flavors, or you can try unique ones like “Pittsburgh Pride.” I tried the Strawberry and Rainbow Sherbet, and the Strawberry was a fan favorite with my family, praised for its perfect mix of sweet and creamy.
The second stop was Dave & Andy Homemade Ice Cream, found just off Forbes Avenue on Atwood Street. Founded by Dave and Andy in 1983, the parlor has a retro feel and plenty of seating. All of their ice cream is made fresh using recipes passed down through generations. I tried “the flight,” which included four uniquely crafted flavors: s’mores, strawberry shortcake, cookies and cream, and cookie dough. This special cost around $6.25 and came in a container with divided compartments for one scoop of each flavor. Overall, they had some of my favorite ice cream during the trip.
The last place I visited was Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams in Bakery Square. Like Dave & Andy’s, they offer a wide variety of unique flavors. Of the three shops, Jeni’s was the most expensive, costing me $6.50 for two mini scoops. The shop was vibrant and friendly, and I enjoyed a delicious cake batter flavor that had small pieces of cake mixed in, making it very filling and tasty.
