On Saturday, November 1st, not one, not two, but three Parkland sports teams were fighting for a District Championship at Salisbury High School. The triple header of Parkland field hockey, girls’ soccer, and boys’ soccer shows how dominant Parkland athletics are. The teams supported each other and fed off each other’s energy. All of the teams will move on to the state tournament.
Parkland field hockey was the first game of the triple header, and they had the tall task of facing a legendary Emmaus field hockey program. Emmaus’s head field hockey Coach, Sue Butz-Stavin, is in her 50th year as their head coach. Emmaus field hockey has won 15 PIAA State titles. Parkland field hockey’s record was 18-6. They battled hard to swat the hornets, but fell shy by only one goal. This win marked Emmaus’s 37th consecutive District championship. Parkland field hockey will take the intensity of this close game and bring it to states.
Next was Parkland Girls Soccer, who faced the Nazareth Blue Eagles. They were supported by the field hockey team. Parkland Girls’ Soccer forward, Delilah Zaiter (10) said, “When arriving at the stadium, I immediately felt the positive energy from the field hockey team and all the fans. I loved how we got to see another hardworking Parkland team battle with everything they have.” The Parkland girls’ soccer team held a record of 19-3-1 going into the game. They have a lot of talent, with two of their players, Isabella Hallal and Katie Sammarco, being selected as 1st team EPC All-Star and Lehigh County All-Star. Hallal was also named EPC MVP and 1st team all state. Unfortunately, the Blue Eagles prevailed and defeated Parkland 1-0. They will now look forward to states. “I am so proud of my team and how far we have come. Playing in states [means a lot] because of how hard we all work for each other every single day. No matter the outcome, I couldn’t have asked for a better year with a better group of girls,” said Zaiter.
Parkland boys’ soccer was the final game of the triple header, and they would also take on Emmaus. Parkland boys are no strangers to the postseason, as they reached the state finals last season. Midfielder Anthony Bautista received all-state honors, and their head coach, Scott Mang, was named coach of the year. To end the triple header on a high note, Parkland boys’ soccer defeated the Hornets 1-0. They will take this championship energy into state and look to dominate.
Although not all of the teams came out with the district championship, the triple header showed the passion and dominance of Parkland athletics. Fans are excited to compete in states. Go Trojans!
