As a society, people have been cycling through trends in fashion since the early ages. The idea of fashion being a trend then boomed in the early 1910s, and from then on people have been checking in with their most trusted form of media in order to conform to whatever style has generated the most participation.

Right now, social media has skyrocketed the entire concept of trends, especially in regards to the amount of people who are able to start trends. The accessibility of these platforms has made it easy for the majority of the general public to participate in trends with their favorite media influencers.

One such trend that has been captivating audiences on platforms such as Instagram and TikTok is male–identifying media influencers wearing nail polish.

There are many reasons for men to wear nail polish, other than for simple personal preference. This varies depending on the type of influence a man has.

Men who are in the performance industry, such as music artists, get their nails done as an accessory that challenges the modern standards of gender conformity. Their purpose for wearing nail polish is to destigmatize the idea that wearing nail polish is “just for girls.”

Rakim Mayers, commonly known as A$AP Rocky, has told vogue interviewers, “I feel like men should be able to do nail art without feeling feminine.”

Harry Styles is another big name in the music industry who gets his nails done in a different way for every new music video he produces. In an article with L’Officiel, Styles explained , “I don’t think people are still looking for this gender differentiation. Even if the masculine and feminine exist, their limits are the subject of a game. We no longer need to be this or that.”

He adds that,  “I think now, people are just trying to be good. In fashion and other fields, these parameters are no longer as strict as before, and it gives rise to great freedom. It’s stimulating.”

Other men who influence social media platforms more heavily seem to wear nail polish just as a style. Some TikTok influencers seem to gain confidence with having their nails done.

One famous TikToker, Chase Hudson, has stated, “black nail polish is the move, I don’t care what anyone thinks.” Many other influencers, such as Jaden Hustler, have since followed in his footsteps.

While this trend is current and popular, it is important to remember that male pop stars have been challenging the definition of femininity for a long time, and while some forms of fashion are associated with being feminine, that does not change the identity of the person wearing it.
