Are NBA referees blowing the whistle too much?

Referees in the NBA have continued to call more fouls throughout the years and it has agitated not just the players, but also the fans. Physicality, which is a huge part of basketball, is starting to go away. Players realize that the second they try to get a steal or jump up and swat away a shot, they are going to get called for a foul. This makes them just give up the easy basket with no contest.

So what does the NBA need to do? Well, it seems pretty simple to the fans. The league needs to bring back that 1980s physicality that made people turn on their TV and watch the game. But the problem with that is, it also brings in more of what’s also hurting the NBA: injuries. Players getting shoved or punched mid-shot is sure to leave them falling and breaking something. Not to mention the fact that player complaints about foul calls are already through the roof. All referees need to do is become slightly more lenient with their calls. If an opponent barely touches the player then don’t call the foul! If the league chose to consider this concept it would provide a more enjoyable game for the fans and much faster pace games.

But it’s not just fouls that are being called, but also technicals. A major way that players have received technicals this year is by hanging on the rim. One player affected by this is NBA superstar, Jayson Tatum. “That’s a rule that they implemented that quite frankly I don’t think makes any sense, because anybody who has ever played or dunked the ball, your momentum, you just try to make sure that you are stable when you land. You don’t want anyone underneath you. Maybe they just want me to let go and just land on my back, stated Tatum. When these players get ejected, they must leave the arena and fans who came to watch them play are now disappointed just because of one rule.

The league needs to lower the calls on fouls and ejections or it could be a major trouble. Fewer fouls equal more enjoyment for the fans. Let us know your thoughts on these popular ideas in the comments below!
