This November Parkland’s ninth and tenth graders got the great opportunity to listen to an array of guest speakers. The speakers that so graciously gave their time up to speak to the students, excel in their fields and were able to provide advice for the high schoolers. We were lucky enough to hear from seven separate speakers with jobs ranging from Senior Acquiring Editor, to other fields such as Clinical and Forensic Psychologist.
The three presenters that will be spoken about in this article are Gable (a neuro professor), Perez (a veteran that now works in IT at Microsoft), lastly Zamborsky ( an attorney that specializes in Family Law). The way the presentation was set up is there were already 10 pre-picked questions that students got to ask. It was definitely a great way to engage students.
To start off, the presenters shared the mistakes they made and how they went about overcoming them, giving the students a new point of view and reassuring them that there is always a way to come back. For example Gable shared how she failed her first bio exam, but was able to pick herself up, giving the overall mean one grade doesn’t define you.
Some other questions were how to start at their specific progression, some soft skills they never expected, and some entry level skills that they thought were important for their job.
All three speakers left on a good note and gave a singular piece of advice along the lines of:
Gable: “Don’t worry if you don’t know what you wanna do”
Perez: “Don’t be afraid to make decisions if they don’t work out”
Zamborsky: “Keep trying”
