With course selections on the rise, it can be difficult to find the perfect fit. There are over 200 choices, so, which ones truly stand out?
One notable course offered by Parkland Highschool is the EMT (Emergency Medical Technician class. EMT students not only touch on situational medical trauma skills such as CPR, using an AED, and vital signs, but it also offers cooperation with the local emergency service, Cetronia ambulance. Not only are students able to receive real world training, but they a;so have the opportunity to receive certification in medical emergency response.
Also offered in the Parkland curriculum is the Science of Firefighting course. This course focuses on the science behind the career of fire fighting- linking it back to the academics behind the heroes. It shares critical public safety knowledge that may be able to assist students interested in the fire fighting field, or those who are already participating in it.
Jewelry and metals class offers a dual-credit course with Lehigh Carbon Community College. This allows students to receive college credits alongside their high school credits for a fee. The course focuses on metal fabrication soldering, and stone setting, allowing students to create their own unique jewelry pieces.
Parkland TV and Film is an elective course that allows students to work in the school’s professional grade television studio. Students learn the intricacies of the news and film industries such as anchoring, directing, and producing- even having opportunities to submit their work to festivals like the Student Emmys. These students also have the chance to appear on camera or work behind the scenes for the morning and mid-day announcements.
Last but not least is Parkland’s Trumpet Newspaper course. Students-also known as staffers- are given the opportunity to create a newspaper from the ground up with their fellow staffers- from print layout, to article topics, interviews, and writing. The papers are then posted around the school for fellow other students to read and enjoy. Newspaper students are also given the opportunity to attend a yearly news writing competition called PSPA.
There are a plethora of unique courses to fill each and every student’s schedule at PHS. No matter what they are interested in, everyone at Parkland Highschool has the opportunity to share their personal spirit with their classmates in a course that feels like it was made just for them.
