Ironton’s fifth-grade chorus gives a performance during the centennial celebration.

On September 28, 2023, Ironton Elementary School held a centennial celebration in honor of 100 years of educating students. Ironton Elementary School was opened in 1923 and has been providing the community with education ever since. The milestone was celebrated throughout the day with multiple ceremonies and activities that were attended by current and past students, staff, and parents. Students spent most of the day outside having fun on the school’s fields. The fifth-grade Ironton chorus held performances throughout the day in honor of the 100 year history of Ironton.

Memorabilia of the school were displayed in the hallways of the building and featured items such as yearbooks, class photos, and pictures of the school from the past. The memorabilia on display gave everyone a chance to look into the past and witness the history of the school as it evolved. The old photographs of the school show how Ironton has not significantly changed in 100 years and how well the school has been preserved. Ironton Elementary School has never been demolished or remodeled but has only seen minor renovations throughout its years.

One of the highlight events during the celebration was the dedication of a time capsule that is set to be opened 25 years from now. The time capsule was on display for the celebration surrounded by the contents that were chosen to be stored inside. Students filled the time capsule with items they have gathered this year. These items included this year’s class photos, a D.A.R.E. textbook, a calendar of the 2024 Parkland school year, and other school-related objects. Students and staff wanted to show future members of the school what the school was like in the past. When the time capsule is opened, many hope it will give future students the same feeling they had while celebrating and looking back on the 100 year history of Ironton.
