On March 10th, the “Are you Smarter than a Teacher?” competition was hosted in C210 and C220. The competition, which historically had been run by the Student Senate and did not run last year. It has been revived by the Scholastic Scrimmage club this year. All proceeds from the competition will be used to pay for their national competition in late May.
The competition pitted teams of students against each other, with the winning team of students getting the opportunity to face off against a team of teachers. The competition was a trivia competition where the questions got progressively more difficult as the rounds advanced.
The team of teachers consisted of Mrs. Snyder (U.S. history), Mrs. Metz (chemistry), Mrs. Stoverink (English), and Mrs. Gougoustamos (Chemistry). There were 4 student teams who participated: “3 Musketeers”, “Eichhörnchen”, “Batmen”, and “Penn State Altoona”.
The 3 Musketeers” and Eichhörnchen faced off against each other in the first round, with Eichhörnchen emerging victorious. In the other room, Batmen and Penn State Altoona competed, with Batmen winning.Â
In the second round, Eichhörnchen and Batmen faced off, with Eichhörnchen winning and earning the privilege to face off against the team of teachers, who decided to call themselves “Ain’t Nobody Got Time For That!”.Â
In the third and final round, which used real questions from varsity EPC Scholastic Scrimmage, Eichhörnchen proved once and for all that students can be smarter than teachers as they won the match and took home the gold.
The winning students, sophomores Lorenzo Gen De Gala, Kaden Ma, Sonia Lin, and Aditya Ghalsasi were awarded $5 Dunkin’ gift cards for participating . The teachers were awarded the gift cards for generously donating their time.
On being able to defeat the teachers, Eichhörnchen’s top scorer, Lorenzo Gen De Gala (10) stated, “I was a bit surprised and it was definitely a fun, rewarding experience.”
The Scholastic Scrimmage club officers hope to continue the competition into the next school year as it proved to be an entertaining fundraiser that aligned with the club’s focus on trivia.
