Meet the fall’s Morning Call Athletes of the Week

Each week, the Morning Call selects multiple male and female senior athletes from scholastic programs to be nominees for Athlete of the Week. Out of these nominees, one male and one female athlete are chosen based on their outstanding athletic performance or accomplishments. The nominees are then voted on to decide who should become the two Athletes of the Week. Here’s a look at some of the athletes who were chosen from the past few weeks.

For the week of August 27, the athletes selected were Alex Moser of Pen Argyl and TaNiya Pleasant of Southern Lehigh. Alex plays football for Pen Argyl and was voted Athlete of the Week for his performance in a 49-22 win against Wilson. Moser scored a touchdown after returning the opening kickoff 89 yards as well as recording 149 yards and two touchdowns. TaNiya is a volleyball player for Southern Lehigh and recorded six kills, four assists, one dig, one ace, and one block in a 3-0 win over Northampton earning her place as Athlete of the Week.

Melea Weber of Emmaus field hockey and Cade Sawyer of Southern Lehigh football were chosen for the week of September 3rd. Melea recorded 11 goals in two shutout wins, 13-0 against Bethlehem Catholic and 13-0 against Pleasant Valley. Cade set a career-high 254 yards ran and three touchdowns in a 68-28 win over Notre Dame-Green Pond. In the same game, Cade also recorded ten tackles and an interception.

The athletes chosen for the week of September 10 were Northampton soccer player Jackson Vajda and Palmerton field hockey player Sydney Frantz. Jackson was chosen for his two-game performance in which he recorded both goals in a 2-0 win over Liberty and seven goals and two assists in a 10-3 win versus Stroudsburg. Sydney had two goals in a 3-0 shutout against Salisbury only a week after breaking the school record for career goals.

Parkland’s very own football player Trey Tremba and tennis player Sophia Petrocelli were chosen for the week of September 17. Trey showed his athletic excellence in a 31-24 win against Nazareth running for 266 yards and scoring 3 touchdowns including the final touchdown that won the game. Sophia won 6-1 and 6-2 against her opponent allowing the team to defeat Moravian 3-2. Sophia is a veteran in tennis as she has been competing for ten years. She was surprised to have been chosen for Athlete of the Week. “It was a bit of a surprise for me. Tennis doesn’t get as much coverage as other sports but I knew my friends and family were voting.”

Liberty soccer player Josh Lee and Northwestern Lehigh soccer player Camryn Fitch were the Athletes of the Week of September 24. Josh scored four goals in a 12-1 win over East Stroudsburg North and scored three goals in a game against Dieruff High School. Camryn scored 3 goals in a 5-0 win versus Palmerton and also recorded two assists in a 10-0 shutout win versus Saucon Valley.

The first week of October saw Northwestern Lehigh volleyball player Kylie Nagle and Liberty soccer player Dylan Lewis being awarded Athletes of the Week. Kylie recorded 29 digs and four aces during a 3-1 victory against Blue Mountain. Dylan Lewis’ contributed four goals in two games against Whitehall and Nazareth. Winning both games was crucial for the team as it allowed the team to secure a spot in the playoffs.

For the week of October 8, the athletes of the week that were chosen were Danny Darno of Notre Dame Green Pond football and Hannah D’Angelo of Liberty volleyball. Danny is a quarterback for Notre Dame Green Pond and in a 42-7 win versus Northern Lehigh, he completed 18 of his 19 passes resulting in four touchdowns. Hannah recorded 12 kills and one dig as well as generating a hitting percentage of 0.37 in a 3-1 win over Easton.
