Eagles make coaching changes after late-season collapse

After a catastrophic 1-6 end to the Philadelphia Eagles season, culminating in a 32-9 beatdown from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, it became apparent that several coaching changes were in order. However, it was unclear just how many coaches would take the fall.

On January 21st, the Eagles made their first coaching moves, firing Defensive Coordinator Sean Desai and Senior Defensive Assistant Matt Patricia. Desai had been demoted after the Eagles’ Week 14 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, so his firing had come as no surprise. The Eagles’ defense absolutely collapsed to atrocious levels after Patricia took over for Desai. Desai is likely to land another job in the NFL. However, it is imperative to national security that Patricia remains in the NFL in some capacity given that his second career option is building nuclear submarines, and the only thing worse than having an NFL defense implode is having an American military submarine implode.

On January 23rd, the Eagles announced that they were parting ways with Offensive Coordinator Brian Johnson. Johnson had been heavily criticized by the fanbase throughout the seasons for his lackluster playcalling, as the team’s offense significantly declined.

On January 25th, the Eagles hired Vic Fangio to be their new defensive coordinator. Fangio was originally expected to be the Eagles’ defensive coordinator last season, however, he got hired by the Miami Dolphins instead. While Fangio has a great reputation as a defensive coordinator, last season the Dolphins were 22nd in points allowed.

On January 28th, the Eagles hired Kellen Moore to be their new offensive coordinator. Moore was once seen as a serious contender for a head coaching job during his tenure as the defensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys. However, his poor performance as the offensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Chargers (#23rd in points scored) has significantly drained his hype train.

Both Fangio and Moore are significant upgrades over their predecessors, however, both of their recent struggles are of serious concern, especially when it is factored in that Head Coach Nick Sirianni does not call plays. Moore will be implementing a new offensive system for the Eagles.

Regardless of any coordinator changes made, the only way the team will rebound in 2024 is if Sirianni still has the locker room. By the end of last season, it appeared that the team quit on him at times. A slow start to the season will almost certainly spell the end of Sirianni’s time coaching the Eagles. Hopefully, Moore and Fangio will bounce back from poor seasons last year and spur the Eagles to their second Lombardi Trophy.
